We would like to thank our fellow Emerald Society member, P.O. Eileen Fitzgerald, for her heroic efforts today while off-duty in Astoria. Great Job Eileen! Posted @withregram • @peopleofpanynj At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, off-duty PAPD Officer Eileen Fitzgerald was running along a path in Astoria Park in Queens when she came to the intersection of 20th Avenue and Shore Boulevard and observed a crowd gathered along the shore line of the East River looking down into the water. Officer Fitzgerald ran to that location and observed a female in the water below and immediately told a civilian to call 911.
The area is known to have strong currents, so Officer Fitzgerald climbed down the rocks to the woman while speaking to her. The woman said she no longer wanted to live and to let her go. Officer Fitzgerald told her that she was going to help her and asked the woman to go towards her. Officer Fitzgerald and a woman identifying as the victim’s cousin were able to coax her to them on the shoreline and pulled the woman out of the water. Officer Fitzgerald then removed her outer sweater and placed it on the woman. Another unknown man had climbed down to assist at this time, where they helped the woman traverse the rocks back up to street level. As they safely moved the woman back on the embankment, officers from the NYPD 114th precinct arrived on scene and transported the individual to the nearest hospital for further evaluation. A job well done Officer 🙌🏽 #PAPD #serveandprotect #astoria #PANYNJ
